What role will the project play in tackling climate change?
Energy Recovery Facilities (ERF) are recognised in national waste strategies as a sustainable solution.
This project will form part of a portfolio of smaller-scale Energy Recovery Facilities which process residual waste following recovery of recyclable materials.
These facilities are designed to provide localised outlets to recycling facilities to generate energy as an alternative to landfill and export overseas; both of which generate greenhouse gases.
A significant volume of waste is currently buried in landfills. By recovering energy from this material we reduce the quantity of waste to landfill and also reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
This facility is expected to divert up to 90,000 tonnes of waste per year from landfill and generate up to 8 MW electricity.
